Suspension Types
Whether you’re hauling a mini excavator, roller, boat, or just about anything, having a Trailer that can handle bumps and rough roads smoothly is essential. Your suspension system is what keeps your Trailer stable and secure while on the move.
There are several types of Trailer suspensions out there, each with its own benefits. In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at three popular systems: Parabolic Spring Suspension, Rocker Roller Suspension, and Rubber Torsion Suspension. Understanding the differences will help you see why each suspension suits certain Trailers better.
The suspense-sion getting to you? Let’s dive in!
Parabolic Spring Suspension – The Smooth Operator
Parabolic spring suspension is an evolution of the traditional leaf spring system. Instead of multiple stacked leaves, it uses a single or twin curved leaf with a parabolic shape, thinner at the ends, thicker in the middle. This design makes the spring more flexible and efficient at distributing weight.
The result? A smoother ride and better handling compared to traditional leaf springs. It also lowers the Trailer’s centre of gravity, improving stability and reducing rollover risk.
Other advantages include being lighter, more durable, and offering improved fuel efficiency. Essentially, it’s a suspension system that delivers better performance, durability, and towing comfort.
At SureWeld, the Parabolic Spring Suspension features in multiple models, including all Trailers in the 2T and 2.4T Range.
Rocker Roller Suspension – The Heavy-Duty Performer
Rocker roller suspension is ideal for heavier loads, making it a common choice for larger Trailers and caravans. It’s based on leaf spring principles but adds specially designed rocker arms and rollers for a smoother, more stable ride.
Here’s how it works: rocker arms attach to the Trailer’s frame, connecting one end to a leaf spring and the other to a roller. The rollers move along a curved track attached to the axle. When the Trailer hits bumps, the rollers and arms absorb the shock, reducing vibration and sway.
The advantages are twofold. First, it delivers a smoother, more controlled ride than traditional leaf springs. Second, it can carry heavier loads thanks to its weight distribution design, which helps prevent wear and damage.
SureWeld’s larger electrically braked Trailers, like the SW3500ER and SW4500ER, use this suspension system.
Rubber Torsion Suspension – The Low-Maintenance Option
Rubber torsion suspension is a popular choice for Trailers, RVs, and vehicles where low maintenance and smooth handling are priorities. Instead of steel springs, it uses rubber cords arranged in a criss-cross pattern inside a tube attached to the axle.
When you hit a bump, the cords compress and twist, absorbing shocks and reducing vibration. The result is a controlled, stable ride even over rough terrain.
Rubber torsion suspension also requires minimal maintenance. The durable cords don’t need regular lubrication or adjustments, saving time and money over the life of the Trailer.
SureWeld’s Nexxgen range features European rubber torsion components, which are especially popular in the hire industry, for their low-maintenance, customer friendly design.
Choosing the Right Suspension
Picking the right suspension comes down to your towing priorities:
- Lightweight and durable Parabolic Spring,
- Heavy-duty Rocker Roller
- Low-maintenance Rubber Torsion
